The Bombay is a member of the Asian group of breeds, he is the blackest of all cats. The GCCF Breed Standard require that the Bombay "looks like black shimmering patent leather". Combined with deep golden eyes the effect is very dramatic. Created by Nikki Horner of Shawnee Cattery in the USA, the Bombay was devloped by breeding a Brown Burmese to a Black American Shorthair. Many years of selective breeding led to cats that bred true to type and in 1976 the Bombay was recognised in the USA by the CFA.
The video clip is interesting, showing one of the largest Forest Cats with his heavy coat, the Norwegian, and the sleek fine-boned Bombay.
Their temperament is very similar to that of the Burmese; the Bombay is afffectionate, enquiring and intelligent. Highly oriented towards his human family he gives as much attention as he gets. Muscular and agile he likes to be involved and won't just sit around being decorative, and it is said that he takes easily to walking in a harness.
Although the Bombay have no particular health problems, it makes good sense to insure your cats. Many breeders sell their kittens with six weeks free insurance cover. More and more owners are now insuring their pets as advances in veterinary medicine, plus the soaring costs of drugs can mean astronomical bills.
