The Burmilla belongs to the Asian Group of cat breeds and is the result of a mismating between Lilac Burmese queen and a precocious young Silver Chinchilla; the resultant litter of four Black Shaded silver girls was so striking, both in their looks and temperament, that a breeding programme was established to create the breed that has become the Burmilla. The Burmilla Breed Standard was agreed in 1984 and Burmillas achieved Championship status in the 1990s.
The Burmilla is a medium-sized cat with the muscular body type combined with elegance of the Burmese; all Asians have the same general standard, the variation being in coat colour and type. The Asian Group is one of the few that has temperament written into the Breed Standard as part of the scale of points by which cats are judged under GCCF rules.
The Burmilla coat is short and dense with a silky texture although it stands off rather than lying close to the body. The striking quality of the coat is the shading; the hairs are tipped with a darker colour and the Silvers are particularly strking. The amount of shading varies from heavy to light when a tipped effect occurs. The shading develops as the cat matures and some tabby markings are to be expected.
In temperament the Burmilla combines the mischief-making qualities of the Burmese with the laid-back attitude of the Chinchilla. Affectionate, intelligent and gentle they make good family pets; they adapt readily to other members of the household, both four-legged and two.
Although Burmillas have no particular health problems, it makes good sense to insure your cats. Many breeders sell their kittens with six weeks free insurance cover. More and more owners are now insuring their pets as advances in veterinary medicine, plus the soaring costs of drugs can mean astronomical bills.
