The Siamese is quite unmistakable with his brilliant blue eyes, dramatic coloured points and long sleek body and medium-fine bone. The first Siamese appeared in England in the late 1800s brought back from Thailand (then Siam) by a British Diplomat. They immediately caught the imagination of cat fanciers and very soon began to be exhibited at cat shows.
Siamese cats are intelligent, inquiring and very affectionate and are probably the most vocal of the cat breeds and will speak until they get a response from their owners. They are very people-oriented and are real lapcats.
Siamese are medium sized and over the years the head has developed into a much more distinctly wedge shape than the early cats, and those cats which resemble the early examples of the breed are known as Traditional Siamese, though they are not exhibited at shows.
The original colours were seal, chocolate, blue and lilac but there are now many more colours including Tortie, Tabby and Tortie Tabby Points. There have been examples of poor temperament in the breed, but unfortunately that does occur in breeds which become very popular and they are taken up by people who may not have the interests of the particular breed altogether at heart.
Although Siamese have no particular health problems, it makes good sense to insure your cats. Many breeders sell their kittens with six weeks free insurance cover. More and more owners are now insuring their pets as advances in veterinary medicine, plus the soaring costs of drugs can mean astronomical bills.
Like the Persian, the Siamese have suffered a little in popularity over the last 10 years or so. In 1994 the GCCF registered 4,731 cats, which fell slightly to 3,985 in 2003.
